Consumerism plays a huge role in climate change

The energy we use to fuel our everyday lives is much more than the burning of fossil fuels during power generation or fuel for transportation. A new study published in the Journal of Industrial Ecology shows that the stuff we consume — from food to knick-knacks — is responsible for up to 60 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and between 50 and 80 percent of total land, material, and water use. Between 60 and 80 percent of the impacts on the planet come from everyday household consumption; the food we eat, the clothes we wear, access to technology and the items in our homes.
